Are you a driver who frequently tows other vehicles or trailers? If you’re like most other drivers, the answer is probably no. However, there may come a time in your life when you need to tow a vehicle. When that time comes, the staff here at Flanagan Motors Mazda wants to make sure that you know how to tow safely and correctly.

The first thing you should do is make sure that you have a vehicle that is properly equipped for towing. If you think your vehicle is up to the task, there are a few additional pieces of equipment you may need.

For example, you should consider purchasing a hitch, a tool that attaches to your vehicle and connects to the towing system. You will also need a mount and ball to insert into the receiver, the ball part of the tool will connect to the trailer for a secure fastening.

Depending on your vehicle, you might need to purchase a wiring harness so that you can control your the lights and brakes on your trailer.  This all might seem overwhelming, but our parts department at Flanagan Motors Mazda can help you select the right pieces for your vehicle.

If you are thinking that you may need to tow more regularly, it might be beneficial to buy a vehicle that is well-equipped for towing heavy loads. In this case, our staff would recommend you steer clear of sedans and take a look at some of our SUVS instead. We think that the 2019 Mazda CX-5 would be better suited to your towing needs, considering it has a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds.

When driving a vehicle that is towing a trailer, make sure to drive at a cautious speed and to check your mirrors consistently. It’s also good practice to pull over every once and a while to check your connections and make sure everything is secure.
